Personalized Notes From Santa

I’m a parent. I know what it’s like to shop for two months, have Christmas built up from August to December in the malls, so that on Christmas day paper can fly and the excitement is over in ten minutes…our family joke is that the kids play more with the boxes! How about yours? I started sending these Christmas letters to my kids as a way to build them up for more than just a day-they run to the mailbox to see what Santa has to say-about THEM-and then we remember that all through the Holidays. Our Christmas lasts for weeks instead of just minutes…
They tell their aunts and uncles what Santa said and it’s truly magical what you see in their eyes-they know they are great and that greatness lasts a whole lot longer than the toy-fest that starts Christmas morning at 6am and ends at 6:15 (if you’re lucky). Out from under that mountain of boxes and bows and wrapping paper I see a little person emerge who knows that they are loved, and that’s what does it for me. It’s not the tinsel or the ornaments, the carols or the glowing icicles…I’m no Grinch, all that stuff is very nice. But what does it for me is making my kids happy, loved, and secure with themselves. And from one parent to another, nothing feels better than making your kid’s day. And so, I continue to send…and now I offer that little gift of love to you.

Yes, Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus

Yes, Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus

Santa Claus you say?! Everyone knows there is no Santa Claus! Yet, don’t we all want to believe again? Don’t we all want to go back to that place where Christmas was magical and Santa Claus jingling his bells was music to our ears? When our biggest worries were what color were the candy canes and could we pleeeease stay up past 8:30??   I have created this blog to keep some of that magic alive–to let our cares go for even just a little bit each day and reflect on our children and the good that they have done the year through and be proud of them and their friends.  Let us as parents and as friends, as sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles, come here to keep the magic of Santa Claus alive in the hearts of our children and in our own, so that they can grow and flourish and believe in themselves and in others, and make this world a better place–   In the words of Francis Church “Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light which childhood fills the world would be extinguished…No Santa Claus! Thank GOD! He lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.”  Yes, Virginia, Santa Claus lives…

Santa Claus Lives…

Santa Claus Lives On

I have a neighbor who told her 2 year old daughter that there is no Santa Claus!  Can you believe that!?  Her “reasoning” was that she didn’t want her daughter to grow up and think her mother lied to her, hence, think she lied about other stuff besides Santa Claus as well… Honestly, I just didn’t get it–I love the magic of watching my kids whisper about what Santa might bring to them this year, and the look on their faces when they open their Christmas Santa Claus letters!  It’s like one of those Mastercard commercials — Holly and a wreath, $35.00…presents under the tree, about a thousand bucks…that look of joy when they think of Santa Claus…priceless.  I guess eveyrone sees things differently, but I try to preserve that innocence as long as I can in my children–my oldest daughter has her doubts, I can tell, but she hasn’t outright asked and I’m not outright telling, so this year I believe we’ll do the dance around the subject until one of us slips up–until then–I just have to insist–Yes Claire, There Is A Santa Claus

Tick, Tock, The Christmas Clock

Tick, tock, the Christmas clock

I remember when I was a kid, the big thing to do was “snoop”. We’d go downstairs at about 3 am to see the piles of presents left by Santa under the tree, and usually we didn’t get caught.  So slick, we were…

One year, my sister got an alarm clock.  It was a smiley face, the old kind with the two clanging bells on the top that you could hear ticking a mile away.  Well, my brother, who was — well– a boy — and liked to tease — told us that he heard a bomb when he heard the ticking.  Tick, tock, tick, tock, we all (there was four of us) picked up the box that was ticking and played hot potato with it for awhile.  Then, he started yelling “bomb!  bomb!” and ran around the room tossing it up in the air and catching it, shoving it in our faces, etc.

Needless to say, we got caught that year!  But, as far as we knew, Santa did come.

A Personalized Letter From Santa Claus:  A Great Way To Build Self Esteem

Every year when my kids run out to check the mailbox for their Santa Claus letters, I love to watch their little faces light up as they read his words that he took time out of his busy schedule to write, just to them, personally.  How cool is that?

I was on the ball and I did it early this year, and my letters from Santa Claus should be here any day now… before Thanksgiving you ask?   Well, of course!  That gives my kids a good month and a half before Christmas arrives to think about all the reasons why they should be proud of themselves, and this time it’s not only from, well, you know, just their mother.  I say this because, of course I love my children dearly, but I know that on some days they just get that glazed over “I’m lookin’ at you mom, but I really don’t hear what you’re saying” look, and it makes me realize that sometimes they just need a boost from someone who’s not their mother, father, or some other family member.  They need a boost from someone who doesn’t even KNOW their family personally, and who better to boost their ego than old Santa Claus himself?

Thank you, Santa Claus…and a Merry, Merry Christmas!
